Confessions of a Wellness Practitioner
First, as a nutritionist and holistic wellness practitioner, there are some things I would like for you to know. The medical/health community knows a lot about the body, but it does not know as much as we would like. We are still learning about the complexity of the human body. Scientists say they’ve discovered a new human organ that may be the largest organ in the human body. The interstitium is just below the skin and in the digestive, respiratory and urinary systems. It took a new way of examining tissues to figure it out. It was in 2017 that science discovered that we have a lymphatic drainage system in the brain. Science is constantly learning new facts about the body that is helping us to understand ourselves and our systems better. That is why it is critical for you as a person to be in touch with your body and explain to the best of your ability what is going on so that we can help you.
Next, we are not perfect when it comes to eating. We may like cinnamon rolls and I may be able to tell you where you can find the best cinnamon rolls…. but I really do love veggies and fuel my body with healthy foods. An occasional treat is not the worst thing, so I do not beat myself up if I do have something that is not rainbow and veggie-filled. Planning is key when it comes to a healthy diet and lifestyle. My goal is to make life simple. Every morning I pack a cooler of healthy fruits, vegetables, and snacks. Beet chips with guacamole is amazing if you haven’t tried it! Since my food is ready to eat, my food selections are already made. Meal prep and batch cooking is key for the evenings when I get home and may not want to cook. Cook once eat twice (or three times!) is a good motto when it comes to meal prep. It helps to have a plan on Sunday for the week. Let me know if you want me to post more on batch cooking. I also drink a ton of water and tea throughout the day. My body is so much happier when I am properly hydrated.
I have been through health struggles as well. It took years to figure out my health and even I am a work in progress. Depression, anxiety, PCOS, Hashimoto’s Disease, and Fibromyalgia. If there is one thing that I could make people realize about a health journey is that it is a JOURNEY!!! I have tried so many diets ranging from Raw Veganism, AIP Paleo, Whole 30, Fast Metabolism Diet… Just to name a few. What I learned is that it is all about Bio-individuality . We like to say, “One man’s food is another man’s poison.” What works for you may not work for your friend or partner. We are all so different and our bodies are complex systems. That is why it helps to work with a health provider to figure out what works for you.
Along with bio-individuality, there is no perfect diet. Have you heard Michael Pollan’s quote? – “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” Eating unprocessed whole foods will help your body get in its optimal state of health.
